LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a third-party certification program and an internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. It provides building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance.
LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development water efficiency energy efficiency materials selection indoor environmental quality. Certification is based on the total point score achieved, following an independent review and an audit of selected Credits.
Allstream Centre is the only Conference Centre in Canada targeting LEED Silver Certification.
What is 100% Green Power:
In taking steps to further progress their commitment toward reducing their environmental footprint, the Allstream Conference & Convention Centre at Exhibition Place has secured a 100% green power purchase agreement through Direct Energy Business for the next two years. This purchase will be the equivalent of removing 168 cars off the road per year, and offsets the same amount of carbon dioxide as 422 acres of planted trees annually. Starting August 1st, this will be first building on the grounds to be fully powered by renewable energy.
This Renewable, or Green Power, is sourced from Ecologo certified generation facilities, which ensures that the generation is derived from natural sources that replenish themselves over short periods-of-time. When a renewable generator produces electricity, it banks the beneficial environmental attributes that are produced in the form of a Renewable Energy Credit (REC), which represents proof that one megawatt hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from a renewable source—such as wind, solar, low impact hydro, biomass, biodiesel or geothermal power—and delivered somewhere into a power grid. Since all sources of electricity—whether they come from renewable or non-renewable sources—are combined once they are added to the grid, the purchase of the renewable attributes (REC) guarantee that the Allstream Centre's energy purchase is supporting the production of clean, renewable electricity.
